After being accused of murder in 1965, a young Black deaf man finds himself swallowed up by the justice system and incarcerated without a trial.
Donald Lang, a Black Deaf Chicago Westside man, was accused of murder in 1965. He was never taught sign language, or how to read, and was unable to communicate with the outside world. Donald was represented by a white Deaf lawyer from Chicago’s Northside. The story was recounted in the book “Dummy” and later, adapted into a 1970s television movie, starring LeVar Burton and Paul Sorvino.
SPEAK NO EVIL re-examines Donald Lang's story to explore how institutionalized racism and discrimination against the disabled community, that still resonates today, may have played a part in Donald Lang being denied access to resources.
